What is Future Guernsey?

Future Guernsey is a political movement, formed to be an enduring organisation, which helps activate decisive government and the delivery of policies essential to the long-term prosperity of all islanders.

Why have you created Future Guernsey?

Islanders have made clear that they do not believe Guernsey’s system of government is working, and they want to see measurable, long-term solutions that truly embrace Guernsey’s most pressing issues.

Just one in ten (13%) islanders believe Guernsey’s current political system is working and only a third (33%) of people feel that their views are well-represented in the States.

Future Guernsey has been created as a direct response to what islanders have told us they want – an accountable, unified government that delivers policies essential to the long-term prosperity of all islanders.

What does Future Guernsey want to achieve?

Future Guernsey will advocate for a government that leads on policy, rather than personality. We will create a coherent suite of policies, grounded in research, informed by islanders, and designed by a broad base of local subject matter experts.

We will promote the election of a new generation of high-calibre Deputies who will choose to adopt a manifesto focussed on the island's key priorities.

Who’s behind Future Guernsey?

Future Guernsey has been founded by a group of islanders with varied business backgrounds from media and communications to accounting, law and insurance.

We are a not for profit, limited by guarantee (LBG) company, registered and based in Guernsey. We
have a Board of Directors, a Chief Executive and a Political Adviser. To find out more about the individuals behind the organisation, visit the Our People page.

What are Future Guernsey’s aims and objectives?

Our vision is an island that is a welcoming, optimistic place with widespread prosperity. We believe that the future of Guernsey is one where our unique heritage goes hand-in-hand with progress, to embrace the challenges facing the next generation, and create a thriving place to call home for all.

How are you going to make a difference?

Three-quarters (75%) of the people who took part in our research said they would like to see the States govern based on policy rather than personality. Therefore, we have built our platform around six key policy priorities, with a dedicated Delivery group to ensure every element of our plan is achievable.

What are the policy areas?

The policy areas we have chosen are Education, Health and Care, Housing, Climate Transition, the Economy and Fiscal Policy.

Running alongside these policy areas is a dedicated Delivery group made up of former public servants and project delivery experts, who are solely focussed on getting things done.

How did you choose the policy areas?

We asked islanders about their main priorities and, based on their feedback and our own insight, we chose the most pressing policy areas to address.

What are your policies?

We’re currently in the process of building our policies and working with some of the island’s brightest minds to shape a future direction for Guernsey. Once these are finalised, we will create a manifesto outlining these policies and giving candidates what they need: well-researched, clearly thought-out policy that the electorate can understand and get behind.

Who is assisting the policy working groups?

Every person involved with the policy working groups is a local resident and an expert in the field they are advising on.

We’ve drawn from a wide range of subject matter experts to populate the policy working groups and they include teachers, property developers, ex-public servants, former heads of non-profit organisations, accountants, climate strategists, financial advisers and medical professionals.

Are the people on the policy working groups being paid for their time?

No. All of the members of the policy working groups have given freely of their time and they are not being paid to participate.

Why have you chosen to create this policy structure?

Guernsey is a unique and incredibly special place to live and work and we believe it deserves policies built by islanders, for islanders.

Is Future Guernsey a political party?

No. Future Guernsey is not currently registered as a political party. Under the current law, a political party has a very specific meaning and purpose around the promotion and endorsement of election candidates. Right now, our focus is on the development of policy suitable for adoption by candidates in due course.

If Future Guernsey isn’t a political party, how will you make sure your policies are delivered?

We hope that a whole new generation of high-calibre candidates will be motivated to stand for election and commit themselves, in the interests of the island as whole, to supporting a common policy agenda. Most likely, ahead of the election, that will require the formation of a political party, so the electorate can see who is committed to the delivery of Future Guernsey’s policy plan.

The goal of Future Guernsey is creating the detailed policies, promoting them throughout the community and providing support for that new generation of candidates not only leading up to the election but as an ongoing resource for elected deputies in the next Assembly.

How will you work with people who don’t wish to adopt your policies?

We’ll seek to find common ground on policy with all Deputies, whether they wish to join our movement or just support some of our policy goals.

Previous political groupings have tried and failed; what makes Future Guernsey different?

We have studied what went wrong before. Previous groups were formed in a rush with very little planning or research. They did not have fully formed, well-researched manifestos or work with local subject matter experts to hone policy.

We’ve learned from that experience, and that’s why we have chosen to launch Future Guernsey in a very different way, building the organisation from the ground up, with strong and stable foundations and a reliance on research and insight from local experts.

How is Future Guernsey funded?

All of our funding comes from local sources. We are a not-for-profit organisation and therefore rely on donations from individuals and companies. We are always actively seeking donations.

If you would like to support us, however big or small, you can do so here.

Do your funders get a say in how the organisation is run?

Absolutely not as that would not be appropriate. We have a strict donor policy, which clearly states that donors do not have any sway over policy formation or delivery.

Does Future Guernsey have a membership programme?

At this stage, we are not a member organisation but, if you would like to support us, you can do so by signing up to stay in touch, by following our social media channels or you can make a donation. Any and all donations are welcome, whatever the amount.

If you’d like to offer practical support, we are always looking for volunteers. Please contact us at [email protected].

If I sign up to your newsletter, what will happen to my data?
